Heathcote unearths spring travel mate for Rothfire
Queensland champ Rothfire is set for a new travel buddy after Ekaterina stamped her plane ticket to Melbourne with a dominant win at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Connections were bullish she would be able to replicate the feats of stablemate and half-sister Startantes in the Group 1 Tattersall's Tiara had she gained a start.
However, they were forced to settle for the QTIS 3YO Fillies Plate (1200m) instead where she made a mess of her rivals as a $2.30 favourite.
Trainer Rob Heathcote confirmed stable stalwart Rothfire would again head to Victoria for the spring where he will target Moonee Valley sprint features such as the Group 1 Moir and Manikato Stakes.
He will now be joined be Ekaterina, after she marked herself as one of the most progressive horses in the state.
With Rockhampton rocket Chinny Boom setting a strong speed upfront, jockey Tim Clark was patient off the speed before producing the filly at the top of the straight, where she put paid to her rivals quickly.
"She had the best form in the race although her pattern sometimes doesn't make it easy on herself but she was in striking distance today and put them away well," Clark said.
"She's a talented filly and I'm sure they're going to have a lot of fun with her."
